Oh this was so good! It was so touching how you cried at the end my friend. This made me realize I don't think I have seen a single Kevin Costner movie ever, so I may as well start with this one! And then I guess Waterworld?

P.S. I will now to try incorporate the Sheila-ism "Harsh barley!" into my everyday speech.

P.P.S. The Music Man reference in the subtitle is duly and delightfully noted!

HAAA!!! Marmi—you are just such a gift!!! Truth talk: The Music Man reference was an Easter egg just for you! 🥰 I surprised myself a little at the end, but we have established I’m a committed tear duct enthusiast…what can I say? That damn feel good flick of 1989 got me in the feels goods. Wait—not a single one??? No, I bet you have. I passed on Waterworld…maybe go with The Body Guard? Report back and YES! Let’s make “harsh barley” sweep the nation! Love ya, Chica. You are amazing 💕

Aw man Sheils now you're gonna make ME cry with your Easter eggs hidden just for lil ol' me 😭

Nope not even The Bodyguard although I may have to correct that soon also since who can deny Queen Whitney and the great Dolly Parton masterpiece that is I Will Always Love You ❤️

🥰🙏🏻💥 Oh yes, Whitney is PEAK in that film, Costner kind of shuffles around and gets by on his looks. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I do remember Dancing with Wolves as being quite epic and maybe good..that might deserve a rewatch. Enjoy! 💕

"Your dreams and your purpose may not always be aligned." -- yes. I enjoyed this very much, especially your thoughts about the concepts the film made you think of and related to your own life.

I remain confused about one thing though: did you end up seeing the movie in order to do this wonderful post or is this mostly your sense of it and what the premise made you think of? It sounds like you watched it... 'scuse me - I may be too literal about the whole "never watched" idea.

Next you gotta move on to The Natural! lol. LOVE IT.

I haven’t seen this flic for decades, and it was a lot of fun listening to your engaging review and descriptions. I remember feeling the same way about the underlying theme of “it’s the small things that matter” and I can vividly recall him looking to his family and home. I agree the Iowa Tourist Bureau missed out if they didn’t actually build a field of their own and capitalize on the heaven reference!! Thanks

Ha!! Indeed...someone was really asleep in the corn field on that one, Iowa Tourism! It's one of those films that kind of washes over you--you know things are going to work out and there's a lot of "ponder this life-ism" kind of thing that just feels nice..you know what I mean? Not dogmatic or preachy or too messagy. I can see why it has become a beloved classic. Thanks so much for sticking around to listen and for your thoughtful note. I really appreciate it! :)

Well done! And you speak to my fears about this format in a perfect way. (I’ve always thought hearing my own voice played back to me was weird…)

Movie recommendation: My all-time favorite sports film is “Bull Durham,” which was written and directed by Ron Shelton, a former minor league baseball player. I think it is one of the best screenplays I’ve ever read, and Shelton’s book on the making of the film is an absolute treat.

Thanks Glenn! I appreciate the support and encouragement! This was very fun to do and, for me, felt pretty natural. I bet you are too! Go for it!

And thanks for the nudge to Bull Durham. Even though I’ve not seen it, I know the cast and they are top notch so I might have to put that on the list. The book sounds awesome! Thanks for the rec on that-I love behind the scenes/process kind of work. ✌🏼💕

Yay for audio!!! This was very fun, loved hearing you; the straight-up-no-edited-real-time talk was great, tears and all! Good for you making the audio leap and stretching those skills. But no mention of the young John Cusack?!

Oh wait... wrong 1980's baseball movie!! Cusack was in Eight Men Out! I totally was thinking he was one of the ghosty players in the corn!! Sorry; but if you're still feeling the baseball vibe and want to further explore the White Sox 1919 World Series scandal... And it really is John Cusack!!! Step aside Mr. Costner!!

HAAAAAAA!! Let's be clear: Lloyd Dobbler can act circles around Robin Hood. We know this :) Now I sort of want to see that flick, too! I may work up a whole SPORTZ: THE MOVIES!! series at some point...I do have Hoosiers on my "Never Seen It" master list..so we'll see! Also: wouldn't ALL sports be better if ghosts were routinely in play? SPORTS: DO BETTER!!!

This is so timely! In less than 2 weeks, I'm joining a group of 12 on a pilgrimage on the 26-mile Heritage Trail. Our first stop is the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, and we are encouraged to watch (or re-watch) the movie before we go. You've got me pumped to re-watch the film. I loved your perspective and hearing your voice! Also, I get the emotion. My son can confirm how easily I choke up. Thank you!!!

Judy-WOW! Your upcoming journey sounds AMAZING! I hope you'll share it in however you feel comfortable doing. I am sure it will be a transformative experience. A friend of mine who's mom did a lot of youth pastoring said she would teach the film to her groups. There is as much to say about faith, belief, sacrifice, and pilgrimage as there is about dreams. And that's part of what makes it enduring: a lot of ways to connect to the narrative. I can't wait to hear more about your trip. And thanks as ever...your support means the world. X!

I enjoyed everything about this! So breezily conversational and also astutely observant. I haven't watched this in years but I never considered how dreams vs reality is a key thematic element. I was too busy having father/son feelings. 😖 But you are spot on.

Is it weird that I love that you cried at the end? Does that make me some kind of monster? Can you do My Girl next, for no particular reason? 😁

This is really great, Sheila. Looking forward to the next episode!

HAAAA! My friend...YOU are just a treasure. Like I said, you are a total inspiration. Your casts--solo or otherwise--just come off as effortless: smart, funny, relatable, totally engaging no matter the length. So I am just nipping at your heels.

I was also surprised at how that thematic element snaked itself in there. I expected it to be more breezy, as I said, "dreams come true..even the ones of reconciling with your dead pops!" But there's some cautionary stuff to it, especially around the idea that our dreams might look good on paper, but they might not end up being the dreams that sustain and fulfill us. I'm kind of tempted to read the book!

The crying thing...well anyone who read recently knows I'm just a sloppy crybaby and I ain't hiding it!! It absolutely snuck out and then I was in it and there was no taking it out. I gots to be meeeeee!!! :) Yeah, I'll do My Girl...how about a double feature: My Girl and Steal Magnolias, oh and how about Bambi just to round things out? HOWDAREYOUSIR! X!

Thanks Elizabeth! I always appreciate your kind and thoughtful comments! I did watch Field of Dreams for this series. Each month I’ll pick a classic or iconic film I’ve never seen, screen it, and discuss. I’ll make that clearer moving forward. I was also nervous doing audio for the first time, so some things might have gotten jumbled 😉 I thought the movie was so much more layered than I expected and brought up some complicated ideas. Also-perfect summer watch!! 🙏🏻💗
