OMG, this made me feel seen! Apparently, I saw the Matrix in 1999. My college friends insist that I went. But I totally blocked it out. As a result, two decades of references and an entire political framework went right over my head. Fast forward to last year. They re-released the film in theaters. My wife is a huge fan, so we went. And I loved it! That said, knowing what we later learned about the Wachowskis I think most viewers in 1999 missed the gender aspects, so maybe it was better viewed for the "first time" from a 21st century POV. Also, the best Y2K explainer is in Office Space.
THAT is the best Nevahh Seen It story I’ve heard! You win the round my friend! It’s funny you bring up the Wachowskis. I was just a little into it and thought “Was this based on a graphic novel? Who even directed this? Ridley Scott, because he’s the one guy aroundish in this genre that is my go to reference. A shallow Google was all “directed by the Wachowski sisters..” and i was like HOW ARE WE NOT TALKING ABOUT TWO BADASS WOMEN CREATING ONE OF THE MOST EPIC SCI-FI FILMS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. Then I read further. And you know what: I STAND BY IT! This was worth the wait for me at least. Though I am trading in my Baudrillard for Carl Hiaasen…:)
My wife is a big fan of their work. She said that when she saw The Matrix in 1999 all she and her friends could talk about was the internet and the future. Watching it all these years later she agrees it’s a very personal film.
Not classic horror, Sheila, but definitely a chiller in this modern age, I recommend you watch "How I Live Now", based on a book by Meg Rosoff. Principal actors are Saoirse Ronan and George McKay. A seemingly simple but deceptively deep story of human survival.
As far as classics the movie itself may not be considered classic but the story certainly is “Bram Stokers Dracula” and it stars the one and only Keanu Reeves!!!
Another great eppy Sheils! I did watch this one in the theater but don't remember a whole lot, so it was good to relive it through your humorous and philosophical lens. I dug the Y2K discussion especially because I was really in the shit with that whole thing due to I was working at a quant shop investment firm and we had to change all our dates to YYYY instead of just YY. Then when we turned into a new century...nada zip zilch! What a huge nothingburger. That was so funny :D
I have some suggestions about your October eppy! I never got around to watching The Shining but I would say it's very iconic, have you watched that one? All I know is "Heeeeeeere's Johnny!" and those two creepy girls in the hallway. I also never saw Little Shop of Horrors, but I have a feeling you already have Seen It :D Also last year I wrote about The Elephant Man for Eric's pub from Simon's prompt about movies that scared us when we were children. If you haven't seen that one, would love to have your take!
Thanks Marmi!! You were TOTALLY IN IT for Y2K..in fact you and those kinds of companies maybe were the only ones going “Seriously you guys, stop buying pallets of water and beef jerky..this is so much bigger than that!” I was young and careless enough to think “Someone will fix it I’m sure.” OH TO BE THAT CAREFREE AND STUPID ONCE AGAIN! :)
Those are all great October flicks my friend and ones I have actually seen. Though the Shining would have won….you MUST get that in the cue…the book is better, but the movie is still pretty damn great and Nicholson is unhinged in a way where you’re like “I don’t know if he’s acting.” I think I am closing in on screening…..POLTERGEIST! I was such a scaredy-fraid kid that if I were invited to a sleepover where I knew that was going to be a featured part of it, I would immediately fake an illness to stay home. :) Stay tuned! X!
Ooh Poltergeist, excellent choice! Did see that but I remember even less about that one than Matrix. Only that the cute little girl is no longer with us :'( Which makes it even more ominous if you ask me. Looking forward to it my friend!
Hrm, how classic do you like your CLASSIC? I've got top-notch scary, spooky, weird, mesmerizing, chilling and of course thrilling (one-jump-outta-your-seat scene comes to mind)...have you seen Deborah Kerr in THE INNOCENTS (1961)? Or 1972's THE OTHER? Both are great!

Sounds intriguing! I might add it to the general viewing list…maybe an October-fest of chilly flicks is in order!! :)

HAAAA!!! You're right my friend! I might have to add that to the list. I already long to see more of Keanu's eyebrow acting!! :)

Hmmm!! THAT is a good question..I'll have to think on it a little more carefully....those both sound pretty great, though!!! :)
Depends on how you stomach/process gory horror…INNOCENTS (no gore, just terror) OTHER (creepy with a soupçon of gore).
Proceed as you wish.
Good to know! I am not into Gore, except Al of course (groan, really?), but I could make exceptions in the name of GOOD FILMS! Thanks my friend!
THE INNOCENTS is my classic Hallowe’en season movie. I’d recommend getting that one under your movie belt.
It’s also fun to watch children mindfuck adults (if you don’t have kids!)… ;-)
Fabulous work as always 👌🏽
HAA! You are kind..I am enjoying muddling around in this area…muscle building can be fun..who knew? :) X!
