"....the next four years of gross hypocrisy, jaw-dropping chaos, stomach churning corruption, inevitable crimes against humanity, disgraceful international double-dealings, rampant fraud, spectacular grift, salacious greed, terrible suffering, and horrific tyranny. Did I miss anything? Oh right-dazzling stupidity." How / where does one begin to fight back? Will street marches and protests work any more? I think not.

I think it’s up to all of us to set individual examples whenever and however we can. The best places to start are right in our own communities. The day after the election I read a great piece (forgetting the author right now) who landed the line: “protect the vulnerable and speak the truth.” So I am carrying that mandate forward. X!

Maybe, but I think it’s more of an asymmetrical war at this point. A refusal to comply here… a calling out of bullshit there…

I think that’s a great way of putting it.

That was a great movie. Apparently Nixon was a paranoid guy which was his downfall. Maybe Wellbutrin could have prevented his pointless break-in.

Love that your ma was a secretary at the FBI. And that it was boring!🥱

Yeah..his paranoia certainly didn’t help. Still, no one can keep that kind of massive, corrupt enterprise under control forever. This gives me hope.

My mom’s early career is pretty funny to think on. She said that someone in the office told her and her friend that they were basically never going to make much money or advance at the bureau and they were better off getting jobs on Wall St. Which is what they ended up doing. And THAT world did have a lot of Mad Men type scenarios. She was never harassed or abused, fortunately, but she has plenty of stories of her boss coming back from “lunch” completely soused. Wild. Times.

"Both men are hungry, ambitious, and driven." And Jewish- the surnames are obvious.

What does Jewish have to do with this?

Nothing. I just thought it was something else the two men had in common, that's all.

I could’ve sworn I’d watched this, but I think I’m in the “nevah seen it” camp too!

I tried to avoid that Monday too— but even leaving the country wasn’t enough. That poison even found its way to the hotel I was at, where a single TV ran the footage nonstop.

Kevin-it is worth a watch. As I said, illustrates the work of resistance & speaking truth to power in a very satisfying way, which I really need now. I think you had to be in a coma or one of those Peruvian tribes that live off the grid to avoid that latrine spectacular.

Update: I watched it! It was really good. Didn’t realize Jason Robards was in it, and spent (probably) too long trying to remember where I knew Jack Warden from.

Watching and realizing what the Post has become was a bummer.

Yay!! Oh yeah…I forgot to mention it will make you long for the brief time that WaPo had its dignity. Ooops! Hoffman is my guy…I loved his scrappiness in it.

For me, it’s not only a movie. I lived those times.

I was thinking about that a lot. It must have been absolutely breathtaking to see that movie when it came out given everything people had lived through.

Can you imagine, just imagine, what Nixon would have made of Trump? It defies belief that he’s back in the White House.

What the fuck is wrong with America?

Terrific film, and a historical museum piece about different morals and cultural values from a half century ago. Which isn’t that long a time, but feels like it was centuries ago, given the mess we’re in today.

A nice, timely reminder of just how far some of us have fallen.

Thanks for that!

Thanks Mark! It felt really relevant as I watched it. Different morals/values, but not really. We've just allowed so much corruption and unethical actions to go unpunished that it does feel like another world entirely. I am as heartbroken as most these days, but am taking some energy knowing that there are a lot of Woodsteins already working their tails off for the better of all of us. Stay strong and hang in there.

Exposed. Yes. That’s the word I’ve been looking for to match what I’ve been feeling too as I deal with both numbness and sadness. That was a great movie and I need to watch it again!

Same my friend. I know that’s all part of the tactics in play, but it doesn’t make it any easier to manage. Rest, take breaks, connect with anyone and everything that brings you joy, “protect the vulnerable and speak the truth.” X!

This was such a great read! Love how you related the movie to our present times, and in doing offered a bit of hope as darkness descends.

That said... I've also nevah seen it. :D

It sort of presented itself. I wasn’t really expecting for it to feel so timeless, but here we are. I’m sorry I didn’t know it had slipped your film watch or I would have dragged you on board! Let’s circle the wagons soon. I HAVE SO MANY NOTES ON DEADWOOD ALREADY! :) And you’re the only one who gets it. :)

It is a true banger…still. I also never get tired of Hoffman’s hair game in the 70s. What sorcery is it that I want to run my hands through it..every..time. :)

If you haven't seen Lenny, it might make a good candidate for Nevahh Seen It! Dustin's hair game is on point, plus he plays Lenny Bruce. Saw it 20 years ago and remember liking it so much I read Lenny Bruce's book, read up on the trial, and even watched some of his old performances, so if I remember right, it was a good movie.
