Hi Friends!
I’m taking an actual vacation this week like it’s 2012! But I wanted to share this short piece about my favorite time of year here in New England. There is nothing as fortifying as making it through the Holland Tunnel that is winter to the fresh, shiny, soul-affirming Land of Spring. If you’re not quite there yet depending on where you live, hang tight just a little bit longer, the season (like the rhythm) is going to get you.
Dorothy’s house crashes down in Oz and dusty, grimy, sepia-toned Kansas is replaced with a technicolor landscape (and a new pair of literally killer shoes). This is spring in New England. A crocus lays a bold sash of purple across a patch of grey-brown yard and you act like it’s witnessing the invention of the color itself. Call it the antidote for seasonal stress disorder brought on by winter, but when spring arrives it’s reasonable to lose your mind a little.
I think part of it is all that juicy, vibrant color flooding your rods and cones, which have been adjusting to dank, dark, muted shades for months as if you were a mole person. It’s overwhelming in a really beautiful and pleasant way. During this time of year I find myself smiling drunkenly into the mesh of a sunny forsythia bush because I can’t think of another reason not to. Another thing that makes spring so heady is the feeling of potential and renewal. The daffodils sprout every season, but their sudden appearance seemingly out of nowhere plays like a magic trick, a minor miracle. Well if these yellow flowers can do it, so can I, goes the inner-logic. And before you know it you’re donating half your tired old wardrobe, getting rid of single use plastics, downloading a Farsi Made Simple app, and updating your resume because it is SPRINGTIME UP IN HERE AND EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
Do not squander this precious go get’em energy! Realistically you have about three weeks of this magical seasonal mojo before summer slips in with her 90-degree-call-out-and-make-it-a-beach-day sultry temptations that you will be both foolish and unable to resist. Spring’s texting: “You up?” Don’t silence that notification; make the most of your spring fling.
Because I can’t seem to bottle up the beauty of this time of year, I have to settle for cramming as much as I can into my photo library. Enjoy!
Have a great vacay and be sure to capture the beauty around you wherever you’re going! I love this time of year too - my favorite for all the beauty and colors in the southwest, but it is 90° here today and I’m already feeling SAD. 🌼
I’m up! 🌸🌸🌸😎☀️
